Cairo Sales Tax Recommends Funding for Projects

The Cairo Sales Tax committee met last week to review several applications for community development and improvements.  Cairo Community volunteers and organizations are encouraged to apply for a portion of an annual pool of $15,000 in sales tax funds for community development and improvement projects.  The Cairo Sales Tax Committee reviews applications for these funds and makes fund recommendations to the Village of Cairo Board.  Volunteers and organizations receiving funding must complete projects and provide receipts before sales tax reimbursements are issued.  To apply for funding visit the Village Office for a Sales Tax Fund application.

Wings Across the Heartland:  The committee recommended $2500 toward the Wings Across the Heartland project.  The Wings Across the Heartland project, started by Karen Neppl, paints wings inspired by Cairo designs, on approved private and public buildings.  The goal of the Cairo Wings Committee is to bring 10 sets of wings into the community, creating a “Wings Walk” and adding public art to the Cairo Community.  The wings walk promotes travel and tourism, encouraging visitors to not only visit our downtown area but explore other parts of Cairo.  Amanda Schweitzer is leading the Wings Committee.  Amanda has secured funding for this project from private donations and the Cairo Community Foundation.

Cairo Ball Association:  The Cairo North Ball Field required a regulation fence for high school softball and little league.  The Cairo Sales Tax Committee recommended $3,100 for this improvement.

Village of Cairo:  The Cairo Swimming Pool required a new speaker system.  The Cairo Sales Tax Committee recommended $1,370.66 to pay for the speaker system for the swimming pool.

Cairo Steering Committee:  Earlier this year Cairo residents were asked to vote on a point of entry sign design.  The sign was chosen by the community.  Neely Tubbs was awarded the contract to paint a mural on the east utility shed, spring of 2020.  Sales Tax funds, combined with a Cairo Community Foundation grant, and proceeds from fundraisers will fund painting and future landscaping and lighting for the sign.  The sign will welcome visitors from the east on highway 2.  The Sale Tax Committee recommended $1,500 to fund this project.

The Village Board reviewed the recommendations made by the committee and approved funding for a total of $8470.66 in Cairo community development and improvements.
